Motor catamarans are growing in popularity every year among yachting enthusiasts and discerning boaters.
Thanks to its two hulls and motorized propulsion, it offers a different boating experience from traditional sailboats.
Exceptional stability, spaciousness, and increased range appeal to those seeking a comfortable and high-performance cruising experience.
What is a motor catamaran?
A catamaran is a boat consisting of two hulls connected by a central deck. Unlike sailing catamarans, motor catamarans do not have a mast or rigging, instead relying on one or two powerful engines. The two hulls provide a wide and stable platform, with a width-to-length ratio often exceeding 50%.
This configuration offers excellent stability without the need for ballast in a monohull. Modern catamarans incorporate innovations such as twin engines, spaced propellers, and advanced navigation systems. Engine redundancy increases safety: if one engine fails, the other allows the boat to return to port safely.
The absence of sails and a deep keel simplifies handling and allows for a shallow draft, enabling the boat to approach the coast and shallow anchorages.

The advantages of a motor catamaran
Stability and comfort at sea
Stability is one of the major advantages of catamarans. The double hull minimizes rolling and heeling: catamarans generally do not heel more than 5°, compared to 25° for some monohulls. In practical terms, this translates into smooth and safe sailing. Passengers do not suffer from seasickness and can move around easily on board. The absence of heel also reduces fatigue and the risk of falling.
Anchoring stability is enhanced by the width of the boat: a catamaran equipped with a gooseneck remains virtually motionless, whereas a monohull tends to swing at its anchor. Families with children appreciate this stable and reassuring platform.
Performance and battery life
Contrary to the common misconception that boats are “slow,” motor catamarans are known for their speed. Some models can reach cruising speeds of 20 to 25 knots, well above the 6 to 8 knots of traditional sailboats. The twin engines also offer excellent maneuverability: the spaced propellers allow for quick pivoting and easy maneuvering in ports.
The hydrodynamic design of the hulls reduces fuel consumption, which improves range and limits environmental impact. In addition, the large deck areas allow for the installation of solar panels to increase energy autonomy.
Speed and range make cruising safer. A fast boat can outrun bad weather and reach shelter before it arrives. Finally, catamarans are built from composite foam, making them virtually unsinkable; even in the event of a collision, there is still enough buoyancy to keep the boat afloat.

Motor catamaran vs monohull: which to choose?
Choosing between a motor catamaran and a monohull depends on your priorities. Monohulls are prized for their ability to sail upwind and their traditional seakeeping qualities, but they heel heavily and offer less space. The deep keel and ballast provide stability, but generate unpleasant rolling when sailing or at anchor.
On the other hand, a catamaran relies on the buoyancy of its two hulls and does not require ballast; it offers considerable width, which increases stability and makes maneuvering safer.
In terms of comfort, the catamaran's almost horizontal platform reduces fatigue and seasickness, making it easier to cook, sleep, and move around. Premium yachting enthusiasts will find spacious relaxation areas with panoramic views.
The interior of a monohull of similar size seems cramped in comparison, with space divided between a single hull. However, catamarans require a larger berth and can be more expensive to purchase. It is therefore important to define the intended use (family cruising, luxury charter, coastal exploration) and budget before making your choice.
